Bali Day 2: Relaxing at the villa. . .

30.3.2013

Tim:

The kids' first priority was a morning swim. There really wasn't a second priority.  Saturday was a day for getting acclimated.  Shelley went to get some groceries while everyone else stayed at the villa to swim.  She was able to get a local SIM card for her phone, but cash is proving to be a challenge. Our debit card has shut us off, I'm sure due to peculiar charges from Indonesia. I should have drawn 4m Rupiahs while I had the chance. If only I knew I would only get one bite at the apple.
 Sunrise swim.

Shelley:

The helper at the villa took me grocery shopping.  We had the foresight to bring extra rice milk and breakfast food in our checked luggage so around 10am I went shopping.  No big deal right?  Wrong!!!!  I had to go on her motorcycle behind her!  Do not get me wrong, our helper is the sweetest person ever.  I just do not like to trust my life to someone I do not know.  (Uncle Rick and the Harley are my upper limits of trust on motorcycles!)  So, 6 grocery bags later we were done (how on earth on a motor scooter?)  Somehow, we made it home with nothing broken (yes, I did buy eggs!).  I must say that both my BoA check card and credit card were turned off!  Thank-you Lord for my Costco card!!  (I still miss Costco!)

Tim:

We found a nice restaurant for lunch (that accepted credit card) so we settled in for a leisure meal followed by a slow walk on the beach.  JP is the reason it was slow, insisting that we stop for every clam, crab, jelly fish and crawdad. The local beach in Sanur is much less densely crowded than Kuta beach, or so we hear. There is a Hyatt near by that claims a chunk of the beach.  It looked nice - waiters serving drinks on the beach, etc. – but we have no regrets with our villa.  The secluded feel of a private pool and living quarters is priceless (or at least preferable to a couple of hotel rooms and competing for service at the hotel).

Shelley:

Lunch was interesting.  I ate chicken satay and Tim had another interesting local dish.  Afterward, I looked up and Jason was sticking a flower in the nose of the “house god” who I must say was wearing some amazing plaid dress.  That was the end of peaceful — I just wanted to pay and leave although no one else seemed perturbed by the nose picking!  We walked to the beach.  It is amazing.  There are some guards at the entrance to the portion by the Hyatt.  I was not sure what would happen but we just pretended we knew what we were doing and they ignored us (racism can be good—I could get used to it!) The beach there was amazing.  Freshly raked with lawn chairs all over in rows and umbrellas!  However, we kept walking and the kids actually enjoyed the beach that was covered in coral fragments and sponges better.  There were tide pools with all sorts of sea life and there were some very pretty jellyfish that we looked at.  Many weird types of seaweed as well.  So much for nicely raked!  I would have enjoyed it!

Tim:

We returned to the villa (after stopping to look at what felt like every last crab and jellyfish) for a nice swim and game of monkey in the middle.  We ordered pizza – the credit card was denied of course so had to pay out of our dwindling cash reserves – and had a relaxing evening.  That was until JP got sick.  As with battle plans, a family of six has to understand that a game plan is just meant to get things in motion with an understanding you that have to nimbly change course on the fly...

Shelley:

I am so grateful for our helper!  Jason was throwing up all over.  I was christened, as were our sheets.  Thankfully, we cleaned up the best we could and then our helper mopped and did laundry the next day.  Fortunately, the flue was short lived so we could enjoy our trip.

Someone swam until he just slept!
Mom and dad loved lounging around reading good old fashioned books.  No wi-fi is a blessing!
Jp had some stomach flu. Thankfully, we had a washer and dryer and it was short lived!

Bali Day 2:The Villa . . .

Some of the daily sacrifices just laying on the ground all over.  Also, incense burning so watch your step!
 The gate to our villa.
View from Living room! 2 steps to the pool.
The girls bedroom was a separate room with A/C and gorgeous bathroom!
Here Devon is relaxing outside his room.
 So many beautiful flowers.
The pool and the front of the master bedroom.

Kitchen/living room/great room enclosed on 3 sides Bali style but open to the pool.
Our furry friends enjoying the cabana where the kids liked to eat snacks pool side!
From the back of the kitchen area to the pool.
Sunrise!  So gorgeous!

Bali Day 1: Arriving at Bali

Our first glimpse of Indonesia!  We got into Jakarta and had to wait to fly on to Bali.  Rice fields in the distance.
29.3.2013

Tim:

Arrived first in Jakarta. We felt the tropical heat hit as we stepped off the plane. First stop was to apply for visas; that is, pay US$25 per person for the privilege of entering Indonesia. Next was to find an ATM. We withdrew 1,000,000 Rupiahs with a gulp. Even though that's just over US$100, I worried about getting it wrong by one or two decimal places. During our four-hour layover, we snacked on Roti'Os and Kispy Kreme donuts, then off to Bali.

Shelley:

It is hot here!  Many of the women are wearing Muslim robes.  The airport has prayer rooms for men and woman.  We get a lot of stares but I am getting used to that.  The Roti is amazing!  I could eat all of them.  Alexis does not care for them.  Emma is loving any bread.  Devon and Jason had a cream filled puff.  I wish we brought Honkies to exchange.  I am worried about cash accessibility.

Tim:

Upon exiting the plane, we saw bats fluttering around as we walked through outdoor corridors to baggage claim.  No immigration checks in Bali because we arrived on a domestic flight.  We met with our drivers (a second driver was needed for luggage) and were quickly on our way to the villa.

Shelley:

Taking the crew to the restroom was interesting.  There was a line one mile long!  Then the bathroom attendant comes out and sends us to the “handicap/family bathroom.”  Such a sweet gesture — did I mention there was an inch of water on the floor to wade through?  Yuk!  Anyway, by the time we got back all the luggage had been retrieved by Tim and Devon.  We were set to run the gauntlet of taxi drivers and find our driver.  “Jim?”  “Aaah, Shelley Hale?”  Funny but he called Tim ‘Jim’ the entire trip!  We did not have the heart to correct him!  What a great driver/tour guide he was for the week!

Tim:

How to describe the villa? It's a picture out of a travel magazine. Centered around a swimming pool and open air living room, three bedrooms connected like spokes of a wheel. Thatched ceilings and wide-open French doors remind you that this is a tropical paradise south of the Equator. After settling on sleeping arrangements, we all retired for the evening. Up since 4am, it's been a long day.

We walked through the gate of the villa into a dreamland!  Fragrant flowers were scattered on the floors tables and beds. Two steps down from the great room opens onto the pool. The great room was gecko heaven for JP.
The master bedroom was amazing.  An indoor and outdoor shower in the bathroom. The air conditioning felt amazing too!
This is the boys bedroom.  The had indoor and out door showers too!

French doors to master bedroom.

View from the kitchen onto the pool.
Emma doing the happy dance! Some how I missed taking photos of the girls room!

Shelley:

Candle light with flowers strewn everywhere—even on the beds!  What an amazing magical place!  We are so tired!  We crashed after figuring out water and luggage.  I think I was asleep before hitting the pillow!

Rubee's Hot Pot

Hot pot is a fun Asian experience.  Almost like fondu with a soup base we sit and put the foods in and wait for them to cook.

Lots of vegetables and muchrooms, little balls of meat (my least favorite). Cuttle balls, fish balls meat balls but also thin sliced beef and crab.
JP gets his grabby hands ready but sister is too fast!  Did I mention noodles?

Very yummy and a very fun way to have a family style meal!

Grandparents, Mickey and Minnie Balloons

I am not sure how these photos were missed up until now… We sure had a lot of fun when Joni and Randy came to visit last year.  We visited Disneyland and brought home Mickey and Minnie Mouse balloons that lived forever.  One of our very favorite things we did together!

May fun with grandparents . . .

Wong Tai Sin Temple
Teeming with people, this temple is an oasis of old historic architecture in the middle of modern skyscrapers.  So many colors, people and smoke from incense fill this busy location.  Many people seeking good luck using sticks or paying for incense.  Also, there are fortune telling booths out side.

Chicken Marsala

We were inside a different grocery store today. It looked like a department store but there were groceries on the bottom floor! I spotted a bottle of Marsala wine and grabbed it! It has been forever since we had Chicken MarsalašŸ˜‹It is one of my absolute favorites! So we get home and realize that we only have pork in the freezer. I get out the flour and brown those puppies. Then I made the sauce. Mushroom, garlic and onion heaven in Marsala wine with some broth. Anyway, it is now reducing so we will see what happens!
